Kiev says Gazprom must pay $3.2 bln fine until April 12
KIEV, Feb 18 (PRIME) -- Russian gas giant Gazprom has to pay a fine of 85.86 billion hryvnas, or about U.S. $3.2 billion given the current hryvna rate, to Kiev until April 12, the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine said in a statement Thursday.
In January, the committee imposed the fine on Gazprom for abuse of its monopoly position on the gas transit market. Gazprom said the fine was a surprise as the company carries out no operations on the territory of Ukraine.
“On February 12, 2016, the committee sent a decision on the case to defendant Gazprom and to third party Naftogaz Ukrainy. Gazprom, which received a fine in accordance with a decision of the Antimonopoly Committee, has to redeem the fine in two months since it received the decision to impose the fine,” the committee said.
Gazprom has the right to challenge the decision in Ukraine’s Supreme Economic Court until February 12.
